There comes a time, especially in the NBA, when the changing of the guard to the new best player in the league occurs. We are currently in the midst of such a time as the great Kevin Durant of the Oklahoma City Thunder makes his case for MVP. He is considered to be virtually unstoppable on the court and at the age of 25 he still has room to improve various parts of his game.
Durant is leading the NBA in scoring at 31.6 points per game, dishing out 5.6 assists and snaring 7.7 rebounds.
Amazingly, he was not even the number one overall draft pick in 2007 as Greg Oden was selected by the Portland Trail Blazers to be their center of the future. Durant was then chosen second overall by the then Seattle Supersonics after one year at Texas.
Some historians who believe history tends to repeat itself are sure this is a repeat of the 1984 Draft in which Sam Bowie was drafted #2 overall (after Hakeen Olajuwon) ahead of one Michael Jeffrey Jordan. Needless to say, Portland wishes they had drafted Jordan in 1984 and Durant in 2007.
Durant’s rookie season of 2007-08 has him on many cards but the best of his rookie cards is commonly accepted to be the Upper Deck Exquisite Collection #94 which has both a patch piece as well as an autograph. The Exquisite brand began about a decade ago and for years, the high end product was considered to have the most desirable rookie card of any NBA player.
Today’s eBay Card of the Day is this 2007-08 Exquisite Collection Kevin Durant rookie. This one has been graded 9 by Beckett Grading Services. It’s not cheap, but high quality auto relic rookie cards from ultra-high end brands have proven their mettle over time. The seller is holding fast to his price, despite more than 40 offers.
You can find other Durant cards here.
With the way Durant is currently playing and establishing himself as the “new” face of the NBA card, these cards might even be considered to be undervalued compared to where they might end up in a couple of years.
