The racing suit worn by the late Dale Earnhardt that turned up missing from the Texas Motor Speedway has been returned and an arrest made. Bet they don’t leave it in the storage closet this time.
The place was new in 1996 and Dale Earnhardt still a driving force in NASCAR. He’d just completed a testing session and decided the boss of the Texas Motor Speedway should have the Mr. Goodwrench racing uniform he was wearing while taking the historic first laps.
Eddie Gossage kept the items on display until recently when they were packed away in temporary storage. Last month they disappeared from a storage closet.
The attorney for a part-time security guard contacted police sometime after last the theft of the vintage suit, helmet and shoes. The prized racing collectibles were returned to Fort Worth police this week, who then gave the items back to Gossage.
The 44-year-old man’s name is not being released because he has not been arrested or charged. But the Associated Press reports police are preparing a case to present to the Denton County District Attorney’s Office.
