A PSA 5 1909 T204 Ramly Walter Johnson, some early Notre Dame football items including a signed photo of George Gipp and the launch of a massive collection of autographs are among the lots in the newly opened Huggins & Scott Fall Catalog Auction.
Over 1,400 lots are offered, including the Ramly Johnson, considered by many hobby enthusiasts to be the true rookie card of “Big Train,” the highest SGC graded copy of the 1888 N173 Old Judge Cabinet #149-11 Buck Ewing with Mascot (SGC VG-EX 4 and a 1928 Tharp’s Ice Cream Babe Ruth graded PSA 2.
Several fresh-to-the-hobby collections ranging from fresh-to-the-hobby rare autographs and photos to modestly priced vintage and modern cards are included in the auction, which is now underway.
The Arthur “Dutch” Bergman Collection
A halfback for Notre Dame from 1915-1916, and 1919 playing under legendary coach Knute Rockne, Bergman went on to a lengthy career as a college football coach. He also spent one year in the NFL, leading Washington to the 1943 NFL Championship game.
Held by the Bergman family for more than 100 years, more than a dozen relics make their way to the market for the first time, including three Notre Dame team photos from more than a century ago.
One of Bergman’s teammates was the legendary George Gipp and the collection includes a signed Gipp photo. Bergman, who coached Sammy Baugh during that 1943 NFL season, once said that next to Baugh, Gipp had the strongest throwing arm he’d ever seen.
