The team doctor for the 1992 U.S. Olympic Dream Team is auctioning off memorabilia from his time with the team.
Heritage Auctions says Dr. David A. Fischer has consigned autographed shoes from Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird and others along with team-signed basketballs and his Olympic ring.
The items will be auctioned off next month.
“It’s arguably the most significant offering of Dream Team’ game used gear ever to surface in the collectible marketplace,” according to Chris Ivy, director of Sports Auctions
at Heritage. “Due to the brief existence of the team, and the enormous fame and wealth of its members, very little ‘Dream Team’ material has become available.”
By the time USA Basketball called Fischer, he’d already enjoyed a long career, more than 25 years, as the team physician to the Minnesota Vikings of the NFL and Timberwolves of the NBA. A chance to work with the 1992 US Olympic Basketball team, however, was too good a chance to pass up. This was, after all, the first time that the world’s professional athletes were allowed to represent their respective countries at the Olympic games and the US basketball team was sure to be a team unequalled in the annals of athletic history.
“I’ve enjoyed these items and will always have the memories and friendships,” he said. “However, I think it’s time to allow other basketball fans and collectors a chance to enjoy these as well. My family and I are hopeful the new owners will share our passion and continue to care for them with a similar love and respect.”
Several of the shoes include personal messages from the players to Fischer. Autograph collectors will be drawn to a pair of team signed basketballs, each so scarce that only team members and staff had access. A variety of Championship awards are likewise on offer, including a Gold Medal for the “Tournament of the Americas” and a ring representing the Gold Medal achievement at Barcelona.
