Here’s a new one. If you have opened at least one box of 2013 Topps Allen & Ginter since they arrived in the market last week and your trash hasn’t been picked up yet, you may want to don some rubber gloves and dive in those GLAD bags. A dealer discovered over the weekend that Topps had inserted some 1 of 1 glossy parallel cards into the lids of those boxes.
The company has never mentioned the ‘hidden inserts’ in any of its promotional materials.
Brent Williams, the Arkansas dealer who breaks hundreds of cases of various products each year, was cutting some of the boxes up when he sliced into a cello-wrapped card of Marco Scutaro and discovered what may turn out to be the biggest hobby secret of 2013. Williams went through other boxes and found the cards hidden in one of about every 300 boxes.
He related via Twitter how to determine whether your Ginter box has one of the potentially valuable cards. “Best way to do it is slide your hand thru the side. If it is glued, no card. If its not glued on one side then BINGO!” he stated.
The news may excite some collectors who may be in for an added bonus but others who tossed their boxes into the trash or crushed them may not be quite so happy that Topps held back the news.
