The long-time women’s basketball coach at Bellarmine University works on game plans while surrounded by his collection of baseball autographs and other sports memorabilia.
David Smith is all about sports.
He loves coaching. He’s done it long enough to own over 500 victories and counting, much of his career spent at Bellarmine University, an NCAA Division II school in Louisville, KY.
He’s also a big-time collector, Larry Bird fan and Negro Leagues afficianado. In fact it was his acquisition of a signed Buck Leonard baseball that really launched his collection. "The opportunity was there, and I just started picking up things that way," Smith said. "It kind of snowballed from there."
He’s now a regular at sports memorabilia shows when his coaching schedule permits.
The Courier-Journal got a peek at his horde of autographed memorabilia and other stuff he’s accumulated. It shares space with the awards that also adorn his decidely non-palatial office inside Knights’ Hall.
