Stephen and Cheryl McCarty met Ted Williams at a card show in 1989. The result was a friendship they honored by helping retrieve the stolen baseball Babe Ruth once autographed for a young Williams…the only signed ball The Splinter ever owned.
Truth be told Stephen McCarty’s favorite player was Mickey Mantle. But after he and his wife got to know Ted Williams in later years, the avid baseball memorabilia collector grew to appreciate Teddy Ballgame even more.
Browsing Mastro Auctions’ catalog late last year, he discovered the baseball he knew had been stolen from Williams’ Florida residence some 25 years earlier.
He sprang into action and the result was a happy reunion for the baseball with Williams’ family—and now a display piece everyone can see.
