One of only a few complete 1922 E120 American Caramel baseball card sets, a 1916 Sporting News Babe Ruth rookie card, a high-grade set of 1956 Topps and hundreds of other lots of vintage sports cards kicked off Goldin’s December Elite Vintage Auction Thursday night.
The 100-year-old issue includes cards of Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Walter Johnson and other stars of the era. The 240-card set offers a comprehensive look at baseball roster of the time. It’s a major challenge to piece together and the set offered by Goldin ranks third on PSA’s Set Registry despite a 1.18 GPA. Bidding opens at $5,000.
Other complete set and near set offerings include a collection of T205 Gold border cards (205/231) including Cy Young, Christy Mathewson and Walter Johnson, multiple large lots of T206s including a near set of 500 cards with 22 graded, another group of 320 and a collection of 83 Hall of Famers.
A complete 1956 Topps set, with every card graded 8 or higher, including both checklists and the team card variations, carries a $15,000 opening bid.
A set of 1953 Topps, Near sets of T202 Hassan Triple Folders, 1933 Goudey, 1934-36 National Chicle, 1948-49 Bowman Basketball and 1956-57 Topps Basketball are up for grabs as well as two sets of 1986-87 Fleer Basketball with Michael Jordan rookie cards.
The M101-4 Ruth rookie card carries a $150,000 opening bid. The same card was offered by Goldin in June and was reported sold for $510,000.
Other single card highlights include a 1961-62 Fleer Wilt Chamberlain rookie card graded PSA 9, a PSA 4 1911 T3 Turkey Red Ty Cobb, PSA 4 and PSA 6 copies of the 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle and a 1966-67 Topps USA Test Bobby Orr rookie card.
Numerous high end unopened boxes are part of the sale including a 48-pack box of 1979-80 O-Pee-Chee Hockey (Gretzky RC).
Among the memorabilia offered is an autographed Bill Russell jersey, a handwritten Lou Gehrig letter, a dated, inscribed and personalized autographed Babe Ruth baseball from January of 1927 and a 1959-60 Oscar Robertson Cincinnati Bearcats jersey that originated in the Hall of Famer’s collection.
The auction will run through Jan. 11.
