Decades old unopened material and some autographed baseballs of some pre-War baseball icons are the headliners in the new Collect Auctions catalog.
There are nearly 1,300 lots of vintage sports cards and sets in the auction, which is now underway.
The most popular item thus far is a 1970-71 Topps Basketball 1st Series wax box. Likely tucked inside are sharp cards of Lew Alcindor, Oscar Robertson, Wilt Chamberlain, John Havlicek (a short print), Elgin Baylor, Elvin Hayes, the rookie cards of Pat Riley and Bob Dandridge and several other Hall of Famers and major stars.
In less than 24 hours, bidding had surpassed $13,000.
Like most of the other unopened vending and wax material in the auction, the ’70-71 box originated with long time dealer Larry Fritsch Cards. Collect has been sourcing numerous items from the the 50-year-old company’s inventory for the last several years and the current auction offers another group.
Other unopened material includes a 1988-89 Fleer Basketball wax case, a 1970 Topps Super Baseball box, 2nd, 3rd and 4th series vending boxes of 1971 Topps Baseball, a 1981 Topps Football rack pack case and a 1975 Topps Baseball vending case.
A large collection of autographed material is up for grabs, including some single signed baseballs from Jimmie Foxx (JSA), Walter Johnson (PSA) and Ty Cobb (PSA).
Lower grade rookie cards of Mickey Mantle and Willie Mays, a high grade 1965 Topps Baseball set and a Babe Ruth check signed and made out to his daughter Julia in 1935. Her hand written endorsement is on the back.
