Even in a steady sports memorabilia market like Chicago, business could be better for one long-time shop. They’re trying to make up for it elsewhere.
Not many sports card shops can say they’ve been around since 1973, but CPS Sports and Coins–located in Chicago’s Loop–is a fixture.
Cubs, Bears, Bulls, Sox, Hawks…it all moves in good times. These, however, are not the best of times. Complicated by a physical move, the economic barometer has been down for the store.
“Sports, stamps and coins are not essential when you have to pay the bills,” says owner Ned Fishkin.
Still, the store has been around long enough to have seen this kind of economy before and Medill Reports says they’re savvy enough to shift their efforts online–and to another part of the business.
