Clean Sweep Auctions has opened bidding on the largest catalog auction in the company’s long history. Nearly 600 lots are on the block in the sale, which runs through January 31.
As usual, there are popular and rare baseball cards and autographs, but the company’s first auction of 2018 also has an extensive lineup of autographs from golf and boxing.
T206 collectors will find two Hall of Famers with rare Lenox advertising backs: a PSA 1 Ty Cobb and an SGC 50 Joe Tinker. Both are seeing significant interest from collectors in the early stages of bidding.
Those looking to start a T206 collection or put a dent in their lengthy want list will find a lot of 365 different collector grade cards. There are 95 different lots of pre-War cards in all.
Among the other major auction highlights: a near set of 1948-49 Leaf baseball including the original album, a fresh-to-the-hobby 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle graded PSA 1.5, Willie Mays’ original 1966 player contract with the San Francisco Giants, a large format Babe Ruth display piece from 1941, Cy Young’s hand signed driver’s license, a very rare signed 8×10 photo of former major leaguer Ross Youngs who died in 1927 at age 40 and a 1934 Yankees team signed ball that includes Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig.
Beyond the T206 cards in the catalog, Clean Sweep is offering a rare 1907 Grignon Cubs complete postcard set, rare near sets of 1953 Esskay Meats and 1953-1955 Hunters Weiners, Topps and Bowman sets from 1948 up and some better wax and vending cases from the early 1980s.
Special items within the baseball card singles category include PSA 8 and SGC 7 Old Judge cards, several desirable early Cubs cards from the 1908 Rose Postcard set, Brunners Bread cards of Nap Lajoie and Honus Wagner, a S110 Silk Premium, several 1948 Leaf short-prints including a Hal Newhouser PSA 6, a 1951 Bowman Mickey Mantle Rookie PSA 2.5, rare 1961 Franklin Dairy and Clover Leaf full milk cartons, a 1962 Topps Mantle PSA 8 and a run of 1969 Topps Super Proofs with all of the key cards included.
Other autographs in the auction include slabbed signed Callahan cards, including Rogers Hornsby, Nap Lajoie, Kid Nichols and Honus Wagner, a signed 1970 Topps Thurman Munson rookie card, a Roberto Clemente 3×5 and a signed photo, a Lou and Eleanor Gehrig signed cut, a mint 1940 Babe Ruth cut, a signed Ty Cobb photo from his Hall of Fame induction, a rare Hughie Jennings signed photo, three rare Mickey Mantle signed photos and a Babe Ruth signed 8×10 publicity still from the movie, Pride of The Yankees. Other notable items include a Honus Wagner signed photo, a Wilbert Robinson signed 1930 player contract, a Walter Johnson signed check and several signed letters including those from the desks of Ty Cobb, John McGraw and Johnny Evers.
Basketball collectors will see quality 1948 Bowman lots, several scarce 1950 Scott’s Potato Chips Minneapolis Lakers cards including Mikan and Kundla and a 1969-70 Lew Alcindor rookie card graded PSA 8. The auction also includes an autographed 1976-77 Topps card of the late Pete Maravich.
Boxing collectors will see several Muhammad Ali items including three vintage “Cassius Clay” autographs from the 1960s. There is also an 1893 Jim Corbett signed cabinet card and a James Jeffries signed 8×10.
Football collectors will see many graded cards, a few sets and many desirable autographed items including the earliest known Jim Brown autograph, a 1963 Green Bay Packers player contract with Vince Lombardi’s signature as well as extensive handwritten notations. There are also two items from Packers and NFL legend Curly Lambeau.
Golf collectors will see several desirable signed books, including a 1st edition copy of ‘Golf is My Game’ by Bobby Jones, a Hilton Smith 8×10 and a 1987 Ryder Cup cap signed by Payne Stewart and 16 others.
Collectors of single signed baseballs will see those signed by, Roberto Clemente, Ty Cobb, Hank Greenberg (1938), Lefty Grove, Walter Johnson, Thurman Munson, Mickey Mantle (with rare inscriptions), Satchel Paige (1950) and two Babe Ruth autographed balls dating from the 1920s.
Team ball collectors will see Yankee team balls from 1924, 1925, 1931, 1934, 1937, 1955, 1956 & 1961 among others. There are also clubhouse free 1976 and 1977 Yankee team balls and 1974 and 1976 All Star team balls, all carrying the signature of Thurman Munson.
Among the baseball memorabilia is an original 1955 Yoo Hoo Mantle/Berra sign, Phil Niekro’s 1973 game jersey, various high quality press pins, high-grade original Hartland statues, autographed and game-used bats and the second half of items from Wes Chamberlain’s personal collection.
