Some sports card shops are struggling. Some will close by the end of the year. Then, there’s Brian Jadzak. The Chicago area man has opened four of his Baseball Card King locations in just four years including his latest in the suburb of Downers Grove just last month.
It all started with a small mall storefront. Business was good enough that he expanded into another space next door. Then it was a new shop in Oak Lawn. He expanded to Joilet when he bought out an existing shop. Then, it was the new store in Downers Grove.
Chicago is a solid collectors market and while some smaller shops closed, those with some business sense and a good location can make a go of it thanks to year-round interest in the Cubs, Sox, Bulls, Bears and Blackhawks. It’s not easy and Jadzak admits there are some slow days but he’s a firm believer in diversifying revenue sources and treating people right.
MySuburbanLife, a local media outlet, chatted with him about his business and the hobby in general.
