During this summer’s National Sports Collectors Convention, Rick Limpert visited with collector/dealer Mel Lundgren, who brings a mini version of his hobby shop’s “card bar” to the show. It’s a place to sit, open packs, go through cards and talk about sports, the hobby or anything else. The concept is actually the signature feature of the Maryland store he opened in August of 2017.
As the Facebook post from a visiting mom pointed out, the store has been a huge hit. Bel Air Sports Cards has now moved from its original 700-square-foot location to a 2,000-foot space.
And yes, the card bar is not only still there, it’s grown from 16 feet to 36 feet long.
The shop held a ribbon cutting with local officials on hand last Thursday, then had grand re-opening on Saturday with prize giveaways for kids and adults.
Elizabeth Janny of Patch.com stopped by to check out the new location and get the success story behind a shop that’s barely two years old.
