You may have read the story here not long ago about one fan’s astonishment at getting an autograph request returned by former Phillies’ pitcher Don Carman some 15 years after it was sent. Turns out he’s had a lot of those to answer and now we know what happened….
Some athletes do take awhile to get around to fulfilling fans’ autograph requests through the mail. It’s not unusual to wait months–even a year–for that favorite photo or baseball card to be returned.
But this fall, one man who sent Don Carman a card to be autographed back as a boy back in 1991, made news in Philadelphia by reporting its safe return in 2006. The same thing happened to another guy–who’s put his experience and his conversation with Carman–in a story on Slate.com. Turns out over 200 fan letters wound up in a forgotten box in Carman’s garage. He and his young son took time to respond to all of them.
