Topps’ Million Card Giveaway is centered around giving back “the cards your mother threw out”.
For many die-hard collectors, mom never did toss that cardboard box with your memories inside. Yet for many baby boomers, it’s actually true. Long before cards were worth anything, they were just space hogs.
1950s and 60s moms knew their once-young boys had lost interest and through spring cleaning or moving, baseball cards were often a casualty. Face it…it’s why so many of those cards are worth what they are today.
Woody Paige of the Denver Post (and ESPN) found out about the Topps promotion, and recalling his 1958 Topps set, offered up some fun in his latest column.
