Offering what it calls “the strongest selection of early 20th Century baseball cards in years,” Mile High Card Company launches its next major catalog auction Monday. Headlining the 1,172 lots in the sale is a group of high-grade icons from a rare century-old set.
Ty Cobb, Christy Mathewson and Honus Wagner lead a group of 17 of the finest examples ever graded from the 30-card 1910 E93 Standard Caramel series. All three are graded PSA 9 and each is the only specimen in existence at that grade. A PSA 9 copy of Deacon Philippe is also being offered, making it 4 of the 13 total specimens from the entire series to grade PSA 9 in this auction. Several PSA 8 and PSA 7 Hall of Famers from the set will be listed, all but guaranteeing a dramatic shift in the PSA Set Registry rankings.
Collectors and investors will also have the chance to bid on a T210 Old Mill Joe Jackson, rated ‘Authentic’ by SGC. The card features Shoeless Joe during his days as a minor leaguer in New Orleans.
There are more than 150 T206 cards, many in high-grade including two of the three Uzit backed T206s on record graded PSA 7, as well as an 1888 N162 Goodwin Champions Cap Anson (PSA 6), a 1903 Breisch Williams E107 Willie Keeler (SGC 30), 1911 T205 Christy Mathewson (SGC 84) and 1911 T205 Ty Cobb (PSA 6).
“Collectors will be blown away by the tobacco and caramel cards featured in this auction, and that’s in addition to the usual material that our bidders are used to seeing. We’re really excited to find out what record-shattering results will come about this time,” stated MHCC President and CEO Brian Drent.
The auction isn’t just pre-War, though. Also up for grabs will be:
- 1932 U.S. Caramel #26 Lou Gehrig PSA 6
- 1933 Sport Kings #2 Babe Ruth PSA 8
- 1934 Goudey #62 Hank Greenberg PSA 8
1935 Diamond Stars #1 Lefty Grove PSA 7
- 1939 Play Ball #26 Joe DiMaggio SGC 96
- 1959 Topps #212 Fence Busters (Aaron/Mathews) PSA 10
- 1964 Topps #125 Pete Rose PSA 9
A rarely seen 1961 Topps Dice Game card of Don Drysdale, the only PSA 7 on record and the highest grade ever earned for any Dice Game card, should attract collectors of rare Topps cards.
Numerous complete sets, many among the best known, are in the catalog and some will be broken up and sold individually including a 1965 Topps Master Set, ranked second on PSA’s registry. The fifth ranked 1933 Tattoo Orbit set and ninth rated 1935 Diamond Stars set will also be split up for sale.
Another collector has consigned one of the most comprehensive vintage Pete Rose collections ever assembled, with a PSA 8.5 NM/MT+ copy of his 1963 Topps rookie card among the group.
Cards from other sports will be on the block as well including an autographed 1984-85 Star Basketball #101 Michael Jordan card, authenticated by UDA and PSA/DNA (10), a 1965 Topps #122 Joe Namath (SGC 88), PSA 10 examples of the 1981 Topps #216 Joe Montana rookie and 1986 Topps Jerry Rice rookie, two 1951-52 Parkhurst #66 Gordie Howe cards (SGC 92 and PSA 8), 1979-80 O-Pee-Chee #18 Wayne Gretzky (SGC 96), and 1985 O-Pee-Chee #9 Mario Lemieux PSA 10.
The auction at www.milehighcardco.com will conclude July 9.
