He was a little nervous after spending so much on one baseball card, but John Rogers felt better once he got a call from someone ready to buy it from him.
He’s no stranger to big deals. You can’t spend seven figures on a baseball card without knowing a little something about business.
But John Rogers wasn’t quite sure he should have made the final bid on the T206 Honus Wagner (PSA 5) in Mastro Auctions’ live event Friday night in Chicago. The card was nice–and he’d always wanted one. But it took a push from his wife before he pulled the trigger. The sale for $1.62 million set a record for the highest price paid at public auction for one card.
It’s a far cry from the day in second grade when he cut a picture of a Wagner card from a magazine and showed it off. "I realized I was the only weird kid, nobody else cared," he said.
Rogers now owns one of the world’s most rare baseball cards –and a nice one at that. The Arkansas Globe-Democrat has more on their hometown guy who made national news.
