Police in Southern California are investigating a destructive burglary at a Southern California hobby shop last weekend. Burglars drove a pickup truck through the front of Kaptain Fish Collectibles in Tujunga just before 5 AM March 20, got out and scooped up valuable sports card cases, boxes, single cards and a pair of Kobe Bryant autographed shoes. It was all captured on the store’s security cameras, but so far there have been no arrests.
Owner Sevag Mazakian says between the loss of merchandise and structural damage to the store, the loss could exceed $1 million.
“The products can be replaced eventually over time, but the emotional damage from it, it’s going to take some time for sure,” he told KTLA.
Video shows the driver backing the white truck into the store’s front glass windows. Three men got out and went toward the back of the shop, hauling out numerous high-end cases of cards, loose boxes and single cards.
Mazakian told local media outlets late last week that he was still trying to determine everything that was taken but did post a list of items on social media. It includes cases and boxes of Panini Prizm Basketball, dating back to 2015, two cases each of 2017 and 2020 Prim Football, a case of 2021 Topps Chrome Sapphire Baseball, a case of 2022 Immaculate Football, dozens of loose boxes, a PSA 10 Tom Brady Bowman Chrome rookie card and a PSA 9 1986-87 Fleer Michael Jordan rookie, all of which appear to have been tossed into the truck by the trio of burglars, who escaped before police arrived. A partial list of stolen items is below.
The thieves were in and out of the store in less than five minutes.
It’s the third time in a few weeks that a shop in the area has been burglarized. Police in Burbank managed to catch several suspects who police say broke into Burbank Sports Cards. That break-in took place not long after thieves stole about $230,000 in merchandise from Bullpen Burbank. Reports indicated police were looking into whether those two burglaries may have been related.
Mazakian told ABC 7 the burglary was devastating and he thinks the burglars may have been in the shop before.
He hopes the suspects can be caught and the shop will remain a fixture in the community.
“We built something here that we’re proud of.”
