To Milwaukee Braves fans it was Spahn and Burdette. To autograph collectors it was Lew or Lou.
"Lew" Burdette is how his obituary reads. One of the Milwaukee Braves’ 1950s stalwart pitchers passed away Tuesday at age 80. Burdette sealed the Braves’ 1957 World Series victory over the Yankees and had an excellent career.
His first name was often spelled both ways, but those who thought "Lou" wasincorrect are…well…incorrect. Truth be told, Burdette preferred it. He was a fairly regular autograph guest until ill health caught up to him in later years. He signed his name using both spellings throughout his life.
Burdette was also known as a bit of a prankster. One of his capers escaped the folks from Topps back in the late 1950s.
