One of the hobby’s bigger releases in the latter half of the month, 2022 Panini Black Football arrived this week. It’s a hit oriented product with a couple of guaranteed autographs. We received a 12-box case in the shop and decided to crack one box to see exactly what we were working with.
With only five total cards per box, this break will go faster than a Tyreek Hill 40 yard dash.
The very first card out of the pack… I mean box… was a nice rookie card of Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Drake London.
The second card up was a Futuristic rookie relic of Wan’dale Robinson, the New York Giants solid rookie wider receiver.
The undersized but speedy wideout caught his first touchdown of the season two weeks ago in a win against Baltimore.
The third card was a low numbered parallel of super hot Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, numbered 18 out of 25.
The fourth card was an absolutely gorgeous Smoke Show Signatures of Indianapolis Colts star running back Jonathan Taylor. We see a lot of cards every week and you can get a bit jaded after awhile but when i first saw this card flipped over in the pack it really caught my attention as one of the cooler cards I’ve seen in a while.
The term “smoke show” comes from the fact that the photos are of players as they’re running out of the tunnel through the pre-game smoke, fireworks and pyrotechnic shows. The card is beautifully framed and has an on-card auto of Taylor. We happened to get the last one in the bunch, numbered 25 out of 25. This bad boy immediately went into a one touch.
The RPA was an insert of Los Angeles Chargers running back Isaiah Spiller which offered two pieces of Chargers teal mem and a sticker auto. Spiller’s “autograph” is, unfortunately, not much to write home about and it’s on a sticker, but the dual swatches are a nice touch.
With a price point of between $280 and $300, you need to hit something of significance to come close to making your money back on Black. If that’s the goal, that goal was not met in this box but we did manage to score a very nice autograph of a top player.
Like a lot of boxes these days, you’re betting against the house and the odds are stacked against you, but from what I’ve seen online, there are some great looking cards coming out of this product. In today’s market, a multi-hit product at this price point isn’t the worst. You can see some of the other cards that have been pulled and listed for sale by collectors, shops and breakers here and you can see some of the current boxes SportsZone offers online by clicking here.
