A jersey purported to be the one worn by Babe Ruth in the 1933 All Star game sold for over $650,000 in Heritage Galleries auction over the weekend.
The Yankees jersey advertised as the one worn by the Babe in the first-ever Major League All Star game in the summer of 1933, sold for $657,250. Some reports had suggested a $1 million price was possible, but the auction closed well short of that figure.
The Associated Press had reported that the jersey was found at a garage sale several years ago and purchased for under $1,000. The consignor, an East Coast collector, was not revealed.
At least one major hobby authenticator would not provide an opinion on the validity of the All Star claim which may have steered some bidders away, but it clearly did not discourage others who pushed the price past the $600,000 expectation. The jersey was sold to a bidder present at the auction.
While two outside authenticators did agree in 1998 the jersey was from the proper era, only Lou Lampson attested it as a "1933 Babe Ruth All-Star Game Worn Jersey." That opinion was rendered October 11.
The ’27 Gehrig jersey that also received significant pre-auction publicity after an Associated Press story late last week remained available on the Heritage website this weekend for a price of $830,525 after it did not meet the seller’s reserve price.
One item that sold for well above it’s pre-sale estimate was an autographed photo of Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe. Six bidders chased the historic photo, which was consigned by the family of a former Japanese sports editor. It sold for an astonishing $89,625 against a $20-40,000 estimate.
An NBA "50 Greatest Players" signed lithograph which once belonged to Celtics’ great Sam Jones went for $41,825. The litho was presented to members of the announced team and selected others during the NBA’s 50th anniversary season.
A 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle graded PSA 7 reached $35,850, slightly ahead of recent sales of that popular post-War card.
