An autographed 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle, Evander Holyfield’s gloves from the infamous “Bite Fight” and the market return of Tom Brady’s last touchdown pass of the 2021 season are among the items in the newly launched Lelands Summer Classic Auction.
The Mantle card comes on the heels of the $12 million sale of the SGC 9.5 copy. Signed in pen and obtained by its consignor at a fantasy camp decades ago, the card is being offered for the first time. Within the first 24 hours of the auction opening, bidding had already approached $50,000.
Holyfield’s gloves from his 1997 bout with Tyson recall the third round of the epic heavyweight clash when Tyson stunned the sports world by biting a chunk out of Holyfield’s ear in a moment of frustration, then proceeding to bite the other later in the round, causing a disqualification. The gloves were previously sold for over $35,000 at a 2012 auction where Holyfield consigned his personal pieces.
Making its return to the memorabilia market is the football Brady threw to Mike Evans for what initially appeared to be his final career touchdown pass. Lelands originally offered the ball from the Tampa Bay Bucs’ playoff loss not long after the January 23 game and it sold for $518,628 but when Brady opted to return to the NFL the day after the auction closed, the sale was voided.
The football is photo-matched and consigned directly from the fan who caught it after Evans tossed it into the stands following his 55-yard TD reception.
The auction also includes a 2000 Playoff Contenders Rookie Ticket #144 Brady Autograph card graded SGC Mint+ 9.5 with a 10 autograph grade, a Bill Russell 1964-65 Celtics game-used warmup jersey from one of his MVP seasons, and the program issued for Game 4 of the 1886 “World’s Series” between the Chicago White Stockings and the St. Louis Browns—the precursor to the modern World Series.
Additional auction highlights include the original artwork for Willie Mays’ 1953 Topps card,
PSA and SGC 10 copies of Michael Jordan’s 1986-87 Fleer rookie card, the lone 1999 Upper Deck Athlete of the Century Jordan Autograph numbered to 23 that’s graded PSA 10
