More vintage baseball cards from the Richard Merkin Collection are on the auction block. Items from the collection brought record prices during the last auction conducted by Hake’s, including $25,255 for a 1928 Pittsburgh Crawfords Negro League Team photo that featured Josh Gibson and was signed by Harold “Hooks” Tinker along with a number of rare Cuban baseball cards such as the SGC graded 1910 Punch Jose Mendez that sold for $32,890.
Hake’s latest auction, set to close in November, has more Cuban baseball cards designated by SGC with “The Richard Merkin” pedigree. These include 1909 Cabanas Bruce Petway; 1910 Punch P. (Pete) Hill, Eddie Plank; 1924-25 Aguiltas John Henry “Pop” Lloyd and others. Other graded and authenticated cards include 1893 N266 Red Cross boxing graded lot of 16, 1910 Red Sun T266 graded boxing card lot and 1948-49 Toleteros Album with 131 cards including Hilton Smith.
Autographed photos authenticated by JSA included: Cy Young, Joe DiMaggio, Satchel Paige, Whitey Ford/Mickey Mantle/Billy Martin triple signed, Pete Rose professional model bat and ball, and more.
Other stand-out items include: John Donaldson historic and only known film footage, Martin Hihigo/Silvio Garcia 1938 Mexican Baseball Union Award, Santurce Crabbers 1939 real photo team postcard with Josh Gibson, 1935 New York Cubans first year team photo, Ciudad Trujillo High Quality 1937 team photo with legendary players including Josh Gibson and an SGC 80 1952 Bowman Mickey Mantle.
