It seems unmanly. Handling an old autographed baseball, uniform or trading card while wearing……protective gloves? One appraiser says it’s a must when dealing with someone else’s vintage stuff.
You might think your hands are clean. They may well be for daily activities. But there’s oil in them thar fingertips. One museum curator/appraiser got a look at the Antiques Roadshow this month and nearly flipped. The handlers’ hands were unprotected–a no-no says Dr. Lori Verderame.
A trio of autographed baseballs featuring signatures from the 1944 St. Louis Cardinals, Ted Williams in his 1939 rookie season, and an authenticated autograph from Babe Ruth were shown in the episode premiering Monday night . Estimated value was $34,000 to $46,000.
Does this mean you have to wear gloves when handling…a glove?
