One can only imagine the cards that were eyeballed, inspected, submitted and collected to get there but the only completely PSA 10 graded 1989 Upper Deck set is on the market.
All 800 cards plus the Wally Joyner promo card have been encapsulated and rated gem mint. The asking price? $39,995. That’s just a shade under $50 per card.
The set has been #1 on the PSA Registry for ten years running.
Collector Dave Jacobs is offering the set on eBay and has the auction set up to accept offers.
The set was offered last spring as well but with no takers.
In all, PSA has rated 57,589 cards from the set as 10’s, so they aren’t rare, but finding all 800 cards in the set in that grade is not an easy task and likely one that took a lot of money and a lot of time.
The style of label on the iconic #1 card of Ken Griffey Jr. shows it was graded early in the history of both companies. Through the years, PSA has graded 1,964 Griffeys as gem mint. They usually sell for $250-350 in PSA 10 holders.
While Jacobs’ set is the only one that’s complete with 10’s across the board, another collector isn’t far behind. According to the Set Registry, the #2 rated set has a GPA of 9.99 and is missing only the #100 card of Jim Pankovits for completion. Only two of that card have ever been graded 10 and obviously, one of them is in the Jacobs set.
Several other cards have proven elusive in a 10, with several having a population of only three.
