A bulked up base set is coming to 2024 Topps Chrome Baseball, which goes from 220 cards to 300. Of the 300 cards, nearly one-third will be rookies.
Cincinnati Reds shortstop Elly De La Cruz will be on the front of the 2024 Topps Chrome Baseball box and his rookie cards will be in the product.
Configuration
Set to arrive in the latter part of July, Chrome will offer multiple configurations.
Hobby boxes ($189.99) will offer the usual 24 packs and four cards in each with one autograph guaranteed while Hobby Jumbo boxes ($389.99) will have 12 packs with 13 cards in each and three autographs.
There are also Breaker’s Delight boxes, Fanatics exclusive Monster boxes with exclusive content and Blaster boxes (check out links to by them below).
Inserts
Among the insert sets are Radiating Rookies (20 cards), 1989 Topps Design (20–a mix of rookies and veterans), 1989 Chrome Layer Variations, Future Stars (20 young veterans), Ultraviolet all Stars (15), Summertime in the Park (10), Strokes (25), Expose (34), Fanatical (15), Chrome All-Etch (25), All-Etch Rookie Rush (20), Let’s Go (15) and Youthquake (50).
The All-Etch insert is making its return for the first time in 25 years. In 1999, the insert set made its first and only appearance in basketball, featuring players like Kobe Bryant and Ken Griffey Jr. The original release had just two variations: base and refractors. In 2024 Topps Chrome, there will be a base version, and various parallels, all numbered no higher than 99 as well as autographs (see below).
Autographs
All Chrome autographs are on-card.
As usual, Rookie Autographs will be one of the big attractions and the checklist is a sizeable one. Radiating Rookies is another option for first year ink and a much smaller group of possibilities with just 20 players possible.
Legends Autographs, found only in Breaker’s Delight boxes, will feature former greats like Ken Griffey Jr., Sandy Koufax, Nolan Ryan, Ichiro, Johnny Bench, Derek Jeter, Bo Jackson and Dave Winfield, among others. Koufax will have on-card autographs but there are only 91 in all, ranging from 1/1 to /50.
Seamhead Sigs feature MLB play-by-play announcers and other media members who cover the sport.
Eight different veteran players will be featured on 1989 Baseball Autographs, with cards designed along the lines of the Topps flagship set of 35 years ago.
On the Spot Die-Cut Autographs will have both current and former players on a die-cut design.
Dual Autographs pair players from the same team with two signatures per card including both current and former players.
Several of the insert sets will also have autographed versions, including All-Etch.
Relic Cards
Chrome isn’t known for a lot of memorabilia card content but there will be some in 2024. They’ll be found in a subset called Topps Chrome Authentics and autographed versions are possible here, too.
2024 Topps Chrome MVP Buyback
The Topps Chrome MVP Buyback promotion continues with cards of 2023 league MVPs Shohei Ohtani and Ronald Acuna that can be exchanged for store credit at hobby shops at a level that’s typically well above the value of the card. The larger base set could mean fewer cards of the two, however.
