The 2024 NFL Draft was the year of the quarterback and in a hobby that tends to focus its attention on that position, there was plenty of buying activity during and immediately after teams make their picks.
The number of items sold around the world on eBay for the quarterbacks taken in the first round on the night of April 24 saw triple digit spikes compared the daily average the week prior.
It wasn’t top pick Caleb Williams driving the most action, though. eBay data shows New England Patriots draftee Drake Maye saw a 1,200 percent increase in sales compared to the week before.
Since November 1, more than $600,000 worth of Maye cards have sold on eBay, topped by the $3,400 paid for his 2023 Bowman U 1/1 Black Shimmer.
Jayden Daniels, taken by the Washington Commanders, saw an 850% jump in eBay sales immediately after he was drafted. Daniels didn’t appear in Bowman products and has a smaller pool of cards available.
Williams items sold at a 620% higher clip than the week before, but not much more than new Minnesota Viking JJ McCarthy (over 620%) and Atlanta Falcons pick Michael Penix Jr. (nearly 610%). Denver draftee Bo Nix saw a 550% spike.
Williams, however, did lead global searches among first round picks, followed by Maye, McCarthy, Nix and Marvin Harrison Jr. When the Bears selected him with the number one overall pick, “Caleb Williams” was searched nearly 1,300 times per hour on eBay.
Even though he’s yet to play a down in the NFL, over 26,000 Williams cards have sold on eBay since Nov. 1 of last year, totaling over $1.5 million. Over 10,000 cards of the USC product are currently listed on eBay.
Marvin Harrison Jr. still hasn’t signed his NFLPA licensing agreement so it’s uncertain when or if we’ll see any new cards pulled from packs, but he has plenty of Bowman cards and other items on the market from his career at Ohio State and fans jumped on them the day after he was picked by the Arizona Cardinals. Searches for the wide receiver increased by over 290%. The pool of available Harrison Jr. cards currently offered is much smaller.
After the Kansas City Chiefs traded up to select him late in the first round, searches for Texas Longhorns star Xavier Worthy suddenly become very popular several hours later, growing over 1,250% on Friday, April 25.
The top five active quarterbacks with whose cards sold most often during the 2023-24 NFL season on eBay were Patrick Mahomes, Brock Purdy, CJ Stroud, Joe Burrow, and Trevor Lawrence.
