Panini Black Football is one of the nicer products released each football season. Its also one that sells extremely well for us in store and online. A small, sleek five-card black box offers a true high end look and feel and a unique style that collectors can appreciate.
Each box of the 2023 edition has one Rookie Patch Autograph, one additional autograph, one memorabilia card, one base card and one parallel card. At the going rate of $330-$350 per box, it’s not exactly a cheap rip..
Off with the cello wrap and into the internal shiny, silver pack we go.
The first card we saw staring at us was a Kyler Murray Royal parallel numbered to 75. “Kyler the Compiler” has been on the shelf, or at least the sidelines, as Joshua Dobbs has been leading the charge for the Cards.
Next we found our base rookie card of Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Charlie Jones. So far, the Purdue product has as many catches as seen on this card–one– for six yards and has been on injured reserve since late last month.
Our memorabilia card was a nice Futuristic of Cowboys tight end Luke Schoonmaker numbered to 25. It’s a bright Cowboy centric multicolored stitched swatch of the former University of Michigan tight end. So far, in his rookie campaign, Schoonmaker has one catch for one yard but he made it count as it went for a touchdown.
We kept with the light pigmented ball catchers as we then landed an RPA of Detroit Lions TE Sam LaPorta. The Sizable Signatures card offered a big, bright blue piece of jersey above a sharp silver autograph numbered to 99 copies. The Iowa rookie TE’s contributions have been sizable as he’s already grabbed 25 passes for 289 yards and three touchdowns for the surging Detroit Lions.
Our pack was capped off with a Capstones Jersey Autograph card of Washington Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin, again numbered to 25. It offers a beautiful, bold blue signature with four, count ’em four, pieces of memorabilia inside of an overly thick and very glossy card.
With the price tag, Black is a fairly major gamble and based on recent selling prices for the same type of cards that have sold, we didn’t exactly land on 21, but others have had better luck.
