The Chiefs and Eagles will do battle on Sunday to decide the 2022 NFL season champion but a day before that, bidders will tangle in the 15th annual Super Bowl Auction in Phoenix and online.
As we reported last month, Hunt Auctions is once again hosting the event, which takes place at the Phoenix Convention Center Saturday.
Among the marquee pieces are items from the collection of Hall of Fame running back Walter Payton. That Payton family has consigned a group of about 30 presentation game balls. Among them: one from the 1984 game in which he broke Jim Brown’s career rushing record, a 205-yard game against the Packers in 1977 and the one from 1982 when he reached 10,000 career rushing yards.
The colorful, hand painted footballs are just part of an auction that also includes items from the collection of the late Baltimore Colts star Gino Marchetti and numerous items from active players that are coming over from NFL Auctions with those proceeds going to charity.
A 1950s Marchetti Colts jersey has the highest bid now at nearly $25,000.
Super Bowl game balls and other historic pieces are being offered online through Friday before the final round of bidding takes place live on Saturday.
Many of the auction items are on display ahead of the auction. David Hunt showed off the huge collection of Payton game balls and other items to a crew from Fox 29 in Philadelphia:
