A long-time San Francisco 49ers fan’s incredible luck on a $41 gamble is about ready to pay big dividends.
Last March, Steve Garman, a member of the United States Air Force, bought into a break of the newly released 2022 Panini Prizm football where participants chose a single pack from a 12-box case.
Garman’s pack didn’t contain just a card featuring one of the players on his favorite team. It held what became one of the best cards you could expect to pull.
Garman held onto the Black Finite Brock Purdy rookie card and then watched as the last pick in the draft built upon a successful debut season and became a 2023 MVP candidate. The card featuring the former Iowa State quarterback was submitted to PSA for grading and came back as a Gem Mint 10.
Now, nearly a year after he landed it, Garman has consigned the card to Alt, which is selling it in its current auction. The company believes the card could sell for $300,000 or more. As of Sunday afternoon, 21 bids had been made for the card, which stood at nearly $66,000. The auction won’t end until Thursday, Jan. 18.
The back of the card mentions that Purdy had “earned a spot on San Francisco’s opening 53-man roster.”
Other Black Finite rookie 1/1s have sold for impressive prices. In July the Trevor Lawrence sold for $150,000 despite the relatively pedestrian grade of PSA 6. The Jalen Hurts rookie (graded BGS 9.5) went for $144,000 just over a year ago. The Justin Fields (BGS 8.5) netted $90,000 a month before that. Last August, the Jordan Love rookie that was pulled from a box break at a restaurant during the National Sports Collectors Convention realized $28,800.
Autographed versions of the Patrick Mahomes ($312,000) and Justin Herbert ($162,000) were sold in 2023.
“I got the joy of holding it while Purdy worked his way to becoming one of the top QBs in the NFL,” Garman says. “I’d love for somebody to be able to have that card and understand how it feels and what it means through the rest of his career.”
