2022 Panini XR Football hobby boxes arrived on Wednesday. It’s a mid-range product with boxes typically running somewhere in the $350-$400 range. The shop where I work brought in a case.
In keeping with Brief Box Break tradition, this one will be an incredibly quick rip as the box contains two seven-card packs with a typical box holding two autographs and one memorabilia card. One of those autos is a Rookie Patch Autograph. Four parallels are also part of the content.
Right on top of the first pack we found two base star cards, one being Las Vegas Raiders superstar wide receiver Davante Adams and the other, Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen.
We then pulled our RPA that featured Jacksonville Jaguars rookie Travon Walker, numbered to 149.
The rookie linebacker has been all over the field, posting 22 tackles along with 3.5 sacks, a forced fumble and an interception. His “signature” is actually just his initials, which is a departure from some of his other autographs this season that have at least included his entire first name.
We didn’t realize it initially, but we hit pretty big by pulling a case hit out of pack #1: a “Rated XR” Kyler Murray insert. It’s a beauty–printed on acetate stock with a great action shot and a color filled XR logo as the backdrop.
The first pack ended with a numbered Hunter Henry card and rookie cards of Minnesota Vikings cornerback Andrew Booth, Jr. and Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Calvin Austin III.
Our second pack started with base cards of running backs Jonathan Taylor and David Montgomery. Then, we pulled another decent rookie card–this one featuring Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Leo Chenal numbered to 75.
Our memorabilia hit was that of Chicago Bears rookie wide receiver Velus Jones Jr, numbered to 75. His NFL career is off to a bit of a slow start. He has six catches for 79 yards and a touchdown this season. Unfortunately, it’s a one-color patch.
Our last auto was Indianapolis Colts rookie Nick Cross with a sticker auto numbered 6 of 10. Our biggest hit of the box has, like many in this one, played minimally this season.
At the price point that this box commands, we got sacked this time around. Our auto and mem hits were $5 at best. Our saving grace, ironically enough, was the nice Kyler Murray that might be valued at about one-third of our total box investment.
Overall this is a very popular product and we’ve had success selling it over the years but just not in this particular box.
Just like with my Chicago Bears… better luck next season.
