The 2020 edition of Topps Chrome Sapphire baseball is out, but it’s once again an online exclusive with limited availability.
A high-end spinoff of the 2020 flagship set, Chrome Sapphire was offered to Topps Montgomery Club members on Tuesday for $299.99 per box and a limit of two boxes per order. Boxes were then offered to collectors who have accounts with Topps in raffle format.
2020 Topps Chrome Sapphire Configuration
Each box of Sapphire contains eight packs of four cards, with the base checklist featuring the 700 players who appeared in Series 1 and 2. Every box contains one rookie autograph from a checklist of 30 players (see below). There’s also one parallel card per box.
That’s quite a switch from the 2019 product, which was also offered online at $50 per box, but anyone who was online when it was released could order up to 40 boxes. Those boxes are now selling for $600 and up.
Those who have landed boxes of 2020 Sapphire have put them on eBay, where the going rate is now just under $500. How many boxes of this year’s edition were produced isn’t known.
It’s safe to say the appetite from flippers, dealers and collectors for fresh product has opened the door to significantly higher price points that still don’t seem to scare anyone off.
While the limited nature of 2020 Topps Chrome Sapphire should keep prices for popular rookie and star base cards at a premium, the rookie autographs and rare parallels will be the big attraction for many.
Boxes ordered were already on their way to Topps customers Wednesday.
