Panini has announced plans for the latest version of its flagship baseball product. 2019 Donruss Baseball will be out over the winter with the usual assortment of throwback designs to the 1980s and 90s.
Each box will contain 24 packs of eight cards. There will be 16 boxes per case of Donruss, which is licensed by the MLBPA but as usual, won’t be able to use MLB logos and trademarks.
Panini promises three autograph or memorabilia cards, five numbered parallels and a mix that should include approximately ten Rated Rookies, 15 Diamond Kings, 24 variations and five inserts.
While full details won’t be out until release time, Panini says 2018 Donruss will have a “deeper veteran base checklist” with some new parallels including one celebrating baseball’s 150th anniversary, another honoring Jackie Robinson and another with “holo backs.” Season and Career Stat Lines, Artist Proofs and Press Proofs will return as parallels, too.
Diamond Kings is a staple that also has its roots in the 1980s and the ’19 edition will conjure up memories of the black-bordered 1985 set.
Donruss will dig back into the brand’s 1980s genesis with Action All-Stars inserts (the originals were bigger than postcards, these presumably will be a small version), Donruss Highlights (a boxed set back in the day) and Franchise Futures. The rare ‘Whammy’ inserts will be back and feature five new players.
Recollection Collection is a group of buyback on-card autographs, featuring many players from the past and present.
Retro 1985 Signatures pays homage to the 1985 Donruss design with a new look for 2019. There will be parallel versions that will include: Blue – #’d/99 or less; Red #’d to 25 or less; Gold # to 10 or less; Green # to 5 or less and Black (1/1). Signature Series will focus on the game’s current young stars and carries the same parallel breakdown.
There will also be an unsigned version of Retro 1985 as an insert and a Mother’s Day pink parallel for the Rated Rookies insert set.
Donruss will revive 1990s inserts like Dominators, a ten-card set revolving around today’s impact players and Elite Series, also a ten-card set featuring top stars.
Rated Prospects is another insert set that is focused on players still working their way into MLB lineups. There will be a relic version as well.
And for those who can’t get enough 1980s nostalgia, 2019 Donruss will indeed feature more autographs from the San Diego Chicken.
2019 Donruss Baseball should arrive around March 6.
