Training camps will soon be open and we’ve got details on 2019-20 Upper Deck Series 1 hockey.
The annual flagship issue returns November 6 with a much-anticipated rookie class.
2019-20 Upper Deck Series 1 Hockey Configuration
Each box will have 24 packs with eight cards per pack. Every box should once again yield six of the popular Young Guns rookie cards, four Upper Deck Canvas and four Portraits cards along with one Shooting Stars insert. You can get a look at all of the Young Guns cards here.
Base Set
The Series 1 set will consist of 250 cards including 198 base cards, 49 Young Guns and three checklist cards. Parallel cards will include Exclusives, High Gloss and Clear Cut. Top prospects Quinn Hughes, Cale Makar, Ryan Poehling are all decent possibilities for Series One among players who have already debuted in the NHL. Upper Deck will likely release the checklist sometime in late October but we should know the names of the Young Guns before that. Assuming they debut at the start of the season, either Jack Hughes or Kappo Kakko may also appear in the set.
The Canvas checklist will feature a collection of 89 top active NHL stars and 29 of the top Young Gun Rookies, plus two checklist cards. There should be four Canvas cards in every case of 2019-20 Upper Deck Series 1.
Inserts
The toughest inserts to find will include: Ceremonial Puck Drop and Day With the Cup, with just one in every 2,880 packs. NHL Draft SPs will be even tougher at 1:12,960 with gold variations of those in the unicorn category at one in every 60,000 packs.
Portraits gives us a closer look at the players’ faces with 40 superstar veterans and 10 rookies. Upper Deck says there will be Gold and Blue foil parallels, numbered as low as 10.
Shooting Stars returns featuring ten star players from the center, right wing, and defensemen positions. Upper Deck says to “be the lookout for super rare red parallels.”
30 Years of Upper Deck is an insert highlighting all of the classic Upper Deck hockey designs on cards of Wayne Gretzky, Patrick Roy and Connor McDavid. They’ll be found about one in every 30 packs.
Pure Energy will be a 50-card insert featuring what Upper Deck calls “all of the high energy players in the game.”
The Clear Cut PETG inserts return at a rate of one per case, on average. This year’s themes include Cup Components to go alongside the multi-player Clear Cut Foundations and Clear Cut League Leaders.
Relic Cards
Generation Next returns, featuring many of the top young players in the NHL youth movement. Look for jersey and premium patch parallels.
UD Game Jersey features a relic swatch from a checklist of 80 veterans with game-used patch parallels in the mix.

Autographs
Upper Deck Series 1 isn’t really a hit-based product but autographs do exist at a rate of one per case. Canvas Signatures will be numbered to the featured player’s jersey number. Autographed versions of the Ceremonial Puck Drop inserts will fall one in every 30,000 packs.
