It’s a lot cheaper–but it’s no longer a complete set.
2018 Topps Chrome Sapphire Edition baseball has made its return for a third straight year as an online exclusive but unlike 2016 and 2017, this year’s product isn’t a $1,500 complete set. The high-end release is being issued in 106-card boxes with three guaranteed autographs at $199.99 per box.
Base Set
The Chrome Sapphire base set is essentially a mirror of the 2018 Topps factory set with all of the major rookies included including Gleyber Torres and Ronald Acuna. Each box has 100 base cards.
There are also base parallel cards, which are packed three per box. Red parallels are numbered to 10 and one out of every four boxes will include a 1/1 Superfractor.
To complete the set, you’ll have to work at it–and in the end, it might cost you more than that $1,500 unless you can swing some creative trades. Buy 10 boxes, for example, and you’ll have 1,000 base cards but probably still be short of a set. You will, however, have 30 autographs and parallels and probably at least a couple of Superfractors to sell or trade.
Autographs
Each box has three autographed cards. All autographs feature rookies. There are 19 in all including Acuna, Torres, Miguel Andujar, Ozzie Albies, John Flaherty, Rafael Devers, Rhys Hoskins and Shohei Ohtani.
Autograph parallels in 2018 Topps Sapphire include Green (# to 50); Orange (# to 25); Red (# to 10) and there will be autographed versions of the Superfractors that are also 1/1.
2018 Topps Sapphire is online now for $199.99 per box.
