The original brand remains tucked in the hobby’s history books, but the name lives on and it’s back for another go-round during the current NHL season. 2018-19 O-Pee-Chee Platinum hockey will arrive on April 17.
Platinum is a set builder’s product, but there’s enough to chase if you prefer something beyond just your standard hockey cards on shiny stock.
Each box will have 20 packs with four cards per pack. Each box should have an on-card autograph and several parallels, at least two of which will be serial numbered. Boxes are online for around $90.
Platinum’s base set will have 200 cards, with a checklist that includes 140 active veteran players, 50 rookies and ten retired greats.
There are eight different parallels to look out for in 2018-19 O-Pee-Chee Platinum:
- Rainbow (1 in every 5 packs)
- Violet Pixels (1 in every 11 packs)
- Red (# to 199)
- Arctic Freeze (new) (# to 79)
- Seismic Gold (# to 50)
- Orange Checkers (# to 25)
- Emerald Surge (# to 10)
- Golden Treasures (1/1)
Look for the aforementioned base parallels to carry over to the autograph side with standard Rookie Autos running about one in every 30 packs, followed by Rainbow Parallels (1 in every 165 packs); Violet (1 in every 440 packs), Red Prism (# to 50); Gold (# to 25); Orange Checkers (# to 15); Emerald Surge (# to 10) and Golden Treasures (1/1).
With the O-Pee-Chee name, you’ve got to have a ‘Retro Hits’ element and ’18-19 Platinum does. Several different parallels can be found including a Houndstooth look (# to 25).
New insert sets inside 2018-19 O-Pee-Chee Platinum include Net Magnets and The Future is Now. Net Magnets will fall one in every 15 packs with Rainbow Auto Parallels (1:1400); Future is Now cards fall in every 22 packs with Rainbow Autos (1:1400); In Action falling one in every 27 packs (autos 1:650).
One-of-one base set printing plates are also in the mix.
