The dog days of summer will be in full swing, and Upper Deck will have plenty of canines in its 2017 Goodwin Champions set when it is released the week of October 11.
Actually, the Canine Companions is one of several eclectic inserts from the always diverse Goodwin set. That em
broidered patch insert card will begin a three-run in a product that has appeal in and out of sports, as it touches upon world history, sport, geography and science. There will be ancient coins embedded into selected cards, and others that can only be found over the rainbow — in the Emerald City of Oz.
2017 Goodwin Champions Basics
A hobby box of 2017 Goodwin Champions will contain 20 packs, with five cards to a box. The base set will consist of 150 cards, which will include 50 black-and-white short prints. These cards will feature champions of sports and notable people from other walks of life.
A typical hobby box will include base cards, 10 black-and-white short prints or Goudey cards and seven mini-cards. Goudey cards will fall once in every eight packs, and there will be special Goudey Animals (inserted in every 13 packs) and Goudey Presidents (one in every 22 packs).
Upper Deck is promising three hits per hobby box, to be found either as autographs, relics, manufactured patches or 3-D Lenticular cards.
A full checklist is at the bottom of the page.
Inserts, Parallels, Etc.
The mini-parallels will mirror the base set, but there also will be inserts like Canvas Minis, numbered to 99; Cloth Lady Luck Minis (25), Black Metal Magician Minis (17), Wood Lumberjack Minis (8) and 1/1 Gold Presidential Minis. Wonders of the Universe inserts, meanwhile, can be found in every 32 packs,
The main Goodwin autographs can be found in every third hobby box, or one in every 67 packs. Every autograph card in this year’s Goodwin product will be on-card signatures. Inscribed Autographs will be hand-numbered, while some lucky collectors will pull Museum Collection World War II Autographs (every 244 packs), Black & White Autographs (1 in every 1,440 packs), Goudey Autographs (every 640 packs) and Goudey Sports Royalty Autographs (once in every 3,200 packs).
There will be plenty of relic subsets, with five making their debut this year. Museum Collection World War II Relics key on big events and personalities from that war. Goodwin memorabilia will fall one in every 36 packs, while Goudey Relics fall every 150 packs. Dual and premium swatches also will be available.
If you collect coins, then the Ancient Currencies Relics will be an attractive addition. They will be hard to find, at 1 in every 1,082 packs, but will feature coins from ancient Rome, the Ottoman Empire, ancient Greece and even coins from pirate treasure.
Another scarce subset will be based on the book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum. They will include hand-painted Goodwin Masterpieces booklets, numbered to 10; and Illustration Relics, which will include page snippets from selected editions of the 1900 classic. The illustrated cards will fall 1 in every 1,618 packs.
Easier to find will be the 3-D Lenticular Wonders of the Universe, a 42-card set that will feature cards focusing on outer space. World Traveler Map Relics and National Parks Map Relics promise to give collectors a geography lesson.
And, what about those dogs? Canine Companions will be a manufactured patch celebrating different breeds of dogs. They will be broken into five tiers: Sporting, Working, Herding, Hounds and Toy.
