As promised at the Industry Summit in Hawaii last March, 2016 National Baseball Card Day is happening.
This Saturday, August 13, participating hobby shops around the country will offer free six-card packs of special NBCD cards to anyone who wants them. The program is a joint effort by Topps, Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Association.
While Upper Deck and its’ NHL partners have been holding National Hockey Card Day for several years, this marks the first National Baseball Card Day since 2008.

The complete base set is 50 cards but to get the last card in the set (Kris Bryant), you’ll need to make a minimum $10 purchase. There are randomly inserted autographed cards in packs including some signed by Bryant, Mike Trout, Jacob deGrom, Ichiro and Carlos Correa. The backs carry player bios and the card number. No stats are included.
Additional Promotions
Shops will also be giving away other gifts with purchases and holding contests and giveaways throughout the day. Ultra Pro will be supplying a limited number of “one touch” card cases as an additional purchase incentive. National Baseball Card Day packs will include a special Topps BUNT promotional code card for baseball fans to experience the digital side of card collecting and Topps has also randomly inserted autographed cards in select packs.
Major League players in select ballparks will be giving away some sample packs from the field prior to games on Friday, August 12.
“National Baseball Card Day is an opportunity for fans to enjoy the time-honored tradition of card collecting in the middle of a very competitive MLB season,” said Steve Armus, MLB Senior Vice President, Consumer Products. “With cards featuring MLB’s top exciting young stars and David Ortiz in his final season, this set has plenty to offer baseball card collectors.”
