2013 Panini Golden Age Baseball is set to hit store shelves today, the latest edition of the hybrid trading card products that all of the card companies have been putting out for several years now (see Allen & Ginter, Goodwin Champions, etc.).
You’ll find actors, athletes, entertainers, history and other subjects inside this quirky set. If you remember them—or at least remember reading about them—you might get a kick out of the product. You might also get an autographed card of Jim Kiick out of it. The former Dolphins backfield mate of Larry Csonka has signed cards for the product as have Curly Neal of the Globetrotters, golfer Jan Stephenson, comedian Dick Smothers, Eve Plumb (Jan Brady), and a variety of baseball players including Brooks Robinson, Bobby Richardson and several others.
There are historic cut signatures featuring great names from the distant past and memorabilia cards from personalities including the late John Belushi.
It may or may not be good news that the most talked about portion of the set are the Bad News Bears cards. Six original cast members, including Tatum O’Neal signed cards for the set commemorating the 1970’s hit movie.
Panini America has brought back the 1930’s DeLong design for one of its subsets inside Golden Age but you’ll find more than just baseball players in the current itineration. There’s one of those per box.
Last year, one collector pulled an original 1933 Goudey Babe Ruth from his box. This year? You could find a piece of Gene Tunney’s 1919 boxing gloves or even a piece of the ill-fated Hindenburg.
Generally, though, each 24 pack box will contain:
- 1 Historic Signatures card
- 1 Museum Age Memorabilia Card
- 24 Mini Parallels
- 2 Bread For Energy inserts
- 2 Delong Gum inserts
- 1 Three Stooges insert
- 1 Tip Top Bread Label
- 8 Golden Age Playing Cards
- 1 Exhibit Box Topper
