Priced at $175-200 per box, 2013-14 Panini Dominion Hockey was the first product out in the new year, although Canadian card collectors got their hands on them a little earlier. Each one pack box consists of six cards with a Rookie Patch Autograph card, an autograph memorabilia card, and two or more of the remaining cards will have an autograph or piece of memorabilia.
The base cards are numbered to 299 and there are four different, lower numbered parallels: Gold numbered to 50, the Emerald numbered to 5 and a Black 1 of 1. The 1 of 1 printing plates can also be found in boxes of Dominion, and they come in their usual four colors.
Booklets are one of the highlights of 2013-14 Dominion. Frozen Moments and Ice Level will give hockey card fans something different to collect. Everyone who played hockey knows about the annual team and player photographs, when the player would stand and lean on their stick to get their picture taken. Panini has added a new perspective to that, as the camera isn’t in front of the player but under them. The booklets also include an autograph and memorabilia piece for a sought-after rookie. Two recent eBay sales have been a Ryan Spooner booklet for $62 and a Scott Laughton for $50.
The Frozen Moments booklets have an autograph and also tell a story about how the player achieved a certain feat. Several Alex Ovechkin Frozen Moments booklets have sold for $175. They’re numbered to 99 and celebrate the “Goal From His Back”. A more impressive goal was that of Ron Hextall, the goalie for the Philadelphia Flyers. His Frozen moments booklets are numbered to 50, and they are selling for around $90, roughly the same as a Martin Brodeur booklet. Some of the other booklets to search for include the Steve Yzerman which is numbered to 25 and Sidney Crosby which only has 10 examples in packs.
The Dominion Jersey insert set features 100 players, and every card has six parallel versions to chase as well. There are 1 of 1 Snaps, Laundry Tags numbered to 2, Brand Logo cards numbered to 3, Fight Straps numbered to 5 and also Patch and Prime parallels. While the Dominion Jersey set gives a collector a chance to find seven cards of one player, the Quad Jersey set has four players and their game-used memorabilia on the one card.
The Q-CHI card of Blackhawks Patrick Sharp, Jonathan Toews, Duncan Keith and Corey Crawford and Q-WSH card of Capitals Alex Ovechkin, Brooks Laich, Karl Alzner, Philipp Grubauer will be popular.
Panini has not forgotten about hockey fans who like green uniforms with a big tail on them, and card Q-HFD features Hartford Whalers Gordie Howe, Brendan Shanahan, Pat Verbeek and Ron Francis.
The Complete Sweaters and Complete Rookies cards have four uniform pieces from one player on the same card.
Mammoth Jersey cards live up to their name, they come with a huge piece of memorabilia on the front. Two rookies share each card of Rookie Showcase, which has a jersey, numbered to 50, or patch, numbered to 10, version.
The 25 cards in the Dominion Hockey Time Warp Patch insert set bring together the old and the new. Team collectors will want to look at the checklist to see if there is a card they need. Detroit Red Wings fans can get a card with Danny DeKeyser and Nicklas Lidstrom, along with two uniform patches. Mike Gartner and Tom Wilson for Washington fans, Dougie Hamilton and Ray Bourque for Boston, J.T. Miller and Mark Messier for the New York Rangers, team collectors can find a card of two of their stars while other collectors may try to complete the entire set.
Collectors of 2013-14 Dominion Hockey will enjoy the designs of the Tape to Tape Autographs and Stickside Signatures insert sets. Tape to Tape cards are numbered out of 25 or lower, as are the Stickside Signatures. The prices for several Stickside cards sold on eBay include $202.50 for New York Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist, $140 for a Doug Gilmour card that shows him in his Toronto Maple Leafs playing days and $65 for a Bobby Hull, which has to be a bargain if the Brett Hull Stickside sold for $125. Some of the other insert sets with autographs are Rookie Autograph, Rookie Patch Autograph, Rookie Patch Autograph SP, Rookie Patch Autograph Update, Rookie Showcase Pen Pals, Back to Back Beginnings, Hand Signed and Autographed Patches.
Dominion has many 1 of 1 parallel cards, and printing plates, but the Had It Stamped It 1 of 1 cards could be the most valuable. The Had It Stamped It Nicklas Lidstrom sold on eBay for $1,100, the equivalent value of five or six boxes of Dominion. The Saku Koivu sold for $200 and the Vincent Lecavalier card with its rare piece of game-used stick also sold for $200. The autographed NHL logo shield cards are another 1 of 1 to look for. The Rookie Ensigns card of Beau Bennett sold on eBay for $350. The Silver Ensigns insert set has 1 of 1 signed cards of current and retired superstars.
Chicago Blackhawks fans will chase the Engravatures 2013 Champ set. Numbered to 15, they show the Blackhawks players with the Stanley Cup. There is also the Engravatures insert set with many different champion players over the years. Numbered to 10, some of the players in the set are Paul Coffey, Nikolai Khabibulin, Bryan Trottier and Guy Carbonneau.
2013-14 Dominion Hockey includes cards of a wide variety of players, from Gordie Howe to Nail Yakupov, and should appeal to many different types of collectors. A lot of boxes have already been opened. Click here to see singles, boxes and cases listed on eBay.
