One of the year’s most anticipated baseball products is on the shelf. 2012 Topps Heritage continues the long-running ‘throwback’ line that pays homage to the company’s original baseball sets from the 1950s and 60s. Retail boxes hit store shelves in earnest on Tuesday. Hobby shops are expected to get their allotment today, if they haven’t already.
This year’s set reflects 1963 Topps baseball with its plain white borders, color bar at the bottom and the smaller ‘action shot’ in a circle at the card’s base. While the original ’63 Topps included a few variations and quirks, 2012 Topps Heritage lives up to the company’s recent reputation for short prints, variations and other little quirks that will keep collectors guessing.
Some of the autographs and coins are redemptions.
Topps has again placed blue bordered variations in boxes sold at Walmart and red ones inside packs and blaster boxes sold via Target.
You can see a list of the short prints, image swaps and big box border variations here.
Meantime here’s a video offering our first look at the cards courtesy of one of those $20 retail boxes you usually can’t resist when you’re picking up paper towels and cat litter.
