Sometimes it is good to have a chance to reflect on a product rather than making instant decisions and reviews. The 2012 Bowman Platinum box makes a good case for patience.
I know my local store, (Triple Cards in Plano, TX) sold out of his allotment and the current hobby prices are preventing him from restocking. On the other hand, when I had some issues attempting to figure out exactly what the inserts were and how did the parallels work and look, the customers who had opened the boxes were happy to help me with figuring out what I had.
In addition, Topps ran a very successful promotion at the National. About the first 100 customers each day who had a 2012 Bowman Platinum box received a special set with all cards numbered to 499. I will tell you that many collectors—and some dealers– began each of their National days in line at the Topps corporate booth, hoping to secure a set.
So, I thank both the owner and the customers for their help with this product and the information I needed to garner. 2012 Bowman Platinum carries 20 packs per box with five cards per pack. Each box promises two autographs as well as one autograph relic card. The fronts have a nice player photo shown against what is usually a solid background but sometimes is a crowd type scene. The backs have biographical information and another brief blurb as well. You get stats from last year and the player’s career.
Prices for many of the unsigned single parallels and other pulls have dropped a bit as collectors move on to other new products that have arrived over the last three weeks.
The current box price from leading online retailers is in the $120-140 range. My local store did mention that for him to restock the box he’d have to be about $150 to sell the product and thus he is not going to restock Platinum at current levels.
So what’s inside? Here’s what we pulled:
Base Cards: 63 of 100 cards with 3 duplicates
Emerald Refractor Parallels: Nelson Cruz, Felix Hernandez
Ruby Parallel: Yoenis Cespedes
Cutting Edge: Eric Hosmer, Ian Kennedy
Prospects: 9 of 100 with 1 duplicate
Prospect Refractors: Robbie Grossman, Mike Montgomery, Rymer Liriano, Gary Sanchez, Sebastian Valle
Prospect Green Refractors #d to 399: Manny Machado, Will Middlebooks (somewhat surprisingly, these are only brining $1-2 on eBay)
Prospect Gold Refractor: #d to 50: Jonathan Schoop
Top Prospect Inserts: Travis D’Arnaud, Juan Segura, Oscar Tavares, Christian Yelich
Autograph Prospect Refractors: Bryan Brickhouse, Andrew Susac
Yes, we got especially what were supposed to and when some of the prospect refractors have already begun to make a name in the majors (Machado and Middlebrooks). The Ruby Cespedes is definitely a keeper too as the Ruby parallels are issued just one in 20 packs. They’re selling for $5-10 on eBay.
While we didn’t score any terrific autographs—at least how things stand at the moment—2012 Bowman Platinum is a decent value at the lower end of the price range for boxes. It’s a good product for prospectors but this year many of those ‘future stars’ are already making their mark.
