Topps has released the sell sheets for 2012 Bowman Draft Picks & Prospects Baseball. While most of the structure is unchanged, and the provisional checklist is almost entirely “TBD,” there are some significant additions to the 2012 edition of the annual product.
The most important change is with the composition of the 165-card Prospects “insert” set. The deadline for MLB teams to sign their draft picks has been moved up a month to the middle of July. What this means for the collector is that, depending on who does and who doesn’t sign, Topps will be able to set the final checklist for BDP&P earlier than in previous years, and will be able to include most of the 2012 First Round draftees in a 2012 product.
Because of the mid-August deadline last year, collectors had to wait until 2012 Bowman Baseball for Topps to issue the first MLB-licensed card of 2011 number one overall pick Gerrit Cole. Will collectors have to wait until 2013 for Carlos Correa, Byron Buxton, Mark Appel’s first Bowman cards? Odds are, probably not.
The other significant addition is, for the first time, Topps will be offering BDP&P in the popular HTA-exclusive Jumbo pack format. Like with Bowman Baseball, the HTA version will yield three autographs per box – two more than the traditional Hobby box. And as has been the norm, all the usual colored and low-numbered Autographed Refractors will be seeded.
Of course, the remainder of 2012 Bowman Draft Picks & Prospects Baseball will follow the same rubric Hobbyists should be used to: a 55-card all-rookie base set supplemented by a 165-card Prospects “insert” set with both sets available in regular and Chrome versions. The customary range of parallels and Refractors will also be randomly inserted, with the addition of the Silver, Red (serial-numbered to 25) and Purple (serial-numbered to ten) “Ice” parallels, which made their debut in this year’s Bowman, added.
An additional batch of 50-card Bowman’s Best inserts will also be on the checklist and will be available in Refractors (serial-numbered to 99 copies), X-Fractors (numbered to 25), and Atomic Refractors (one-of-one). Finally, there will be a 10-card Dual Top 10 Draft Picks insert (also available autographed), another 25 Bowman Black autographs, and Relic cards featuring the as-yet-to-be-determined rosters from the 2012 All-Star Futures Game.
2012 Bowman Draft Picks & Prospects Baseball is scheduled for release the week of November 28. Each Hobby box will include 24 packs with 10 cards per pack and retail for $3 pack. Jumbo boxes, exclusive to Hobby dealers, will have 12 packs of 32 cards and should cost about $10 for a pack.
