Although it is fairly well known in the hobby that Topps will no longer be producing football cards after their 2009 football plan is done, Topps does continue to create product without just “mailing it in”.
2009 Topps Unique is a good example of that, as the box promises two memorabilia cards and one autograph card in each box plus many other twists.
Topps had used the Unique brand name in basketball to much success as well.
The current on-line retail value of the box is currently between $110-140. Each box contains 24 packs and seven cards per pack.
An interesting twist to the basic set is that 50 cards in the set are numbered to 1829. The basic cards have the look of a player photo set against what almost looks like “leopard-print” borders. The player’s last name is in “shadows” against that background on the left. The player’s photo is in the center of the card while the player’s full name and team name run vertically on the right of the card.
The card backs contain biographical information, 2008 conference stats, a brief mention about an “unique” moment in their career and then 2008 seasonal and career statistics.
Let’s see what our box brought us:
Basic Set: 112 of 150 and 3 duplicates
Short Prints: (#d to 1829 and numbered as part of base set): Drew Brees, Tony Gonzalez, Darrius Heyward-Bey, TJ Houshmandzadeh, Gartrell Johnson, Felix Jones, Aaron Maybin, Willis McGahee, Rashard Mendenhall, Santana Moss, Ben Roethlisberger, Jeremy Shockey
Red Parallel (#d to 729): Deon Butler, Antonio Bryant, Owen Daniels, Joseph Addai, Braylon Edwards, Trent Edwards, David Garrard, Greg Jennnings, Willis McGahee, Rashard Mendenhall, Jason Smith, Ben Roethlisberger, Laurent Robinson, Sammie Stroughter, Reggie Wayne, Wes Welker, Beanie Wells, Roy Williams, Kellen Winslow Jr.
Bronze Parallel (#d to 99): Jeremy Maclin, Rashard Mendenhall
Gold Parallel (#d to 25): Patrick Willis
Unparalleled Performances: Steven Jackson, Randy Moss, Steve Smith, Brian Westbrook
Unparalleled Performances Bronze (#d to 99): Larry Fitzgerald
Alone at the Top: Drew Brees, D’Qwell Jackson
Unique Unis: Donovan McNabb, Zach Miller, Philip Rivers, Ben Roethlsberger, Brian Westbrook
Prime Time Patches (#d to 50): Calvin Johnson Jr
Dynamic Dual Jerseys (#d to 79): Adrian Peterson/Percy Harvin
Game Breakers Autographs: James Davis (#d to 1000)
All in all, a pretty enjoyable break. We did well with our low population pulls like Willis, Fitzgerald, Johnson and Peterson/Harvin. With the three guaranteed hits and more than 40 “smaller” hits in the box, it kept our interest.
