A jersey worn by Michael Jordan in the 1992 Summer Olympics sold for $3,030,000 Wednesday night in a dedicated 24-lot auction of game-used Olympic “Dream Team” game-used jerseys and shoes consigned by Jordan’s teammate, Karl Malone.
The Jordan jersey was part of a collection of shirts and shoes worn by the American team en route to Olympic history, all autographed by the players who wore them. They were consigned by Malone, who was part of the U.S. team that won the gold medal in the first appearance by professionals in the Olympic basketball competition.
The winning bidder’s name wasn’t immediately revealed.
It is now second most expensive piece of Jordan memorabilia ever sold at auction. Last September, Sotheby’s sold the jersey he wore in Game 1 of the 1998 NBA Finals against the Utah Jazz for $10.1 million.
Jordan’s game-worn, autographed shoes photomatched to the pre-Olympic Tournament of the Americas sold for $420,000.
Other results from the auction conducted by Goldin included jerseys worn by Malone ($58,800), Larry Bird ($360,000), Magic Johnson ($336,000), Charles Barkley ($230,400), David Robinson ($116,400), Scottie Pippen ($80,400), John Stockton ($55,200) and the remainder of the U.S. squad.
Malone said the jerseys were laying on the floor of the team’s locker room when families were allowed in and his wife picked them up and kept them. They’d been on display in his home. All were autographed and all of the jerseys were framed.
Team USA steamrolled the competition to win gold, beating Angola, Croatia, Germany, Brazil, Spain, Puerto Rico and Lithuania by an astounding average of 44 points per game. Their epic performance caused global interest in basketball to explode.
