Remember that stash of unopened 1986-87 Fleer basketball boxes purchased by Baseball Card Exchange earlier this year in Missouri? One of them is going to be part of a box break at the National Sports Collectors Convention.
Seven 1986-87 Fleer boxes were originally purchased by a collector who bought them at TG & Y Toys around the time of issue. Untouched since then, they still retained the original 40-cent price sticker. Depending on various factors, unopened boxes today usually sell for $60,000-$80,000.
BBCE is offering packs from one of those boxes for sale at $2000 each with a limit of one per person. If the first 27 spots being offered now don’t sell out by July 15, additional spots can be purchased. The last nine spots in the 36 pack box will be sold at the National on Wednesday, August 1 with the pack distribution set for Saturday, August 4 at BBCE’s booth in the corporate area of the IX Center in Cleveland. Some may opt to open their pack on the spot.
BBCE says two of the packs have a Michael Jordan rookie card showing through the top of the wax wrapper. It’s likely one or perhaps two more Jordan cards are somewhere in the box along with 3-4 Jordan stickers. The decision of whether to open a purchased pack will rest with the buyer, though.
BBCE says once the break is full, packs will be distributed randomly and each pack will go into a tamper-proof holder labeled with the buyer’s name and draft spot and then distributed.
