One of the most sought-after high grade 1960s cards sells again.
Eyebrows raised when a 1962 Topps PSA 9 Sandy Koufax card brought over $66,000 in October of 2006 during an auction by vintage card dealer Andy Madec. While it’s not likely another will reach that plateau, the card continues to sell for prices that could convervatively be described as "strong".
One of the seven PSA 9 cards in existence sold on eBay Sunday night for $26,000. The auction drew 23 bids for a California-based seller.
Recent sales for the PSA 9 1962 Sandy Koufax have averaged approximately $30,000.
1962 Topps are notoriously difficult to find in high grade because of the ‘wood grain’ borders which tend to accentuate even the slightest corner wear. Of the 90,404 cards authenticated and graded by PSA, just 2896 (3.2%) have reached the PSA 9 level. Just 60 cards in the company’s database have been given a PSA 10 label.
Here’s a sampling of PSA 9 population numbers among 1962 Topps star cards:
- Roger Maris 5
- Brooks Robinson 5
- Mickey Mantle All Star 7
- Willie Mays 9
- Lou Brock (Rookie card) 15
- Mickey Mantle 15
- Roberto Clemente 17
The most recent PSA 9 Mantle sold for $8275 while the last Mays offered went for only $5678.
