A 1954 Puerto Rican Winter League contract signed by Roberto Clemente, Babe Ruth autographs and a notes on baseball from Cy Young to The Sporting News are among the items up for bid in Iconic Memorabilia’s Holiday Autographs & Memorabilia Auction.
The auction features over 700 lots of autographs and memorabilia spanning the fields of Sports, Hollywood, Music and History.
“Obviously most companies will promote that a current auction is their biggest and best auction yet, but that statement is truly accurate for our Holiday Auction. It’s really the culmination of a tremendous growth year for us,” says Jeff Woolf, Principal Managing Officer for Iconic Memorabilia. “From start to finish, this auction holds stellar material. Every category has several ‘wow factor’ lots.”
The contract pre-dates Clemente’s 1955 rookie cards. Printed completely in Spanish, the pact states that the young Clemente will be paid $275 per month for the 1954-55 Winter League season. It also contains Clemente’s fingerprint as well as the signature and fingerprint of his father. Bidding starts at $2,500.
The Cy Young signature is Sporting News letterhead and is below his hand-written answers to one question posed by what was then the ‘Bible of Baseball’. In it, he mentions Ruth, Ty Cobb (misspelled by the great pitcher) and Honus Wagner. Young died in 1955.
