Most eBay sports card sales are of the two to five dollar variety, but sometimes the hobby’s classic cards show up there, too. One recent sale proved again that quality cards always find their audience.
A nicely-centered 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle, graded PSA5, sold Sunday night for $18,700 via Just Collect Inc.’s ongoing vintage card sales.
It was the highest auction price for a ’52 Mantle in almost three years and $3800 above the average selling price of $14,900.
The card was one of nine vintage rarities handed over to the company recently.
“Our consignor is a collector who grew up in this country, ran several successful businesses, and moved to Aruba to retire,” explained Just Collect’s Scott Greenwald. The seller is looking to finance some other business ventures. “After several conversations, he agreed to consign his collection. “
Among the other cards sold were three 1933 Goudey Babe Ruths, a ’33 Goudey Lou Gehrig, two 1953 Topps Mantles and a 1952 Bowman Mantle. Four Ruth cards sold by Just Collect beat their averages by 12-25%, an encouraging sign for the vintage card market.
Other vintage cards from the collection are being sold this month.
“It was clearly the best 9 card consignment that we have handled in a while,” said Greenwald.
