49ers star Hugh McElhenny gave 13 year-old Martin Jacobs his jersey following a win over the Colts in 1955. Forced to sell during a divorce, Jacobs recently made a deal to get his prize back.
It was something special even in 1955.
In the less pretentious days of the NFL, kids sometimes got up close and personal with the players right after a game. Martin Jacobs had enough courage to ask star running back Hugh McElhenny for his game-worn jersey one day.
A collector was born and it remained in his possession until a difficult divorce forced him to sell it in a sports memorabilia auction several years ago. But Jacobs never forgot the jersey and as he told the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat, tracking its whereabouts afterward paid dividends.
